Inspiration: Edith Head

I saw this book in the window of a vintage clothing store this afternoon (69 Vintage on Queen) and for the rest of the day I've had Edith Head on my mind.

She had a Masters degree in romance languages from Standford but 0 design experience when she was hired as a costume sketch artist at Paramount. She's a great example of faking it till you make it.
Her incredible people skills, PR savvy, + talent all contributed to her huge success.
Total Inspiration

New Illustrations for THE KIP

For the past few months I've been working on illustrations with the fantastic Communications Firm 52 Pick up.  The gig was for a new condo development in the West end called THE KIP.
Their website launched last Wednesday and you can now see all the illos here.

I was really happy with the limited palette in the illos and how the designers matched up the colours in the type treatment. Also love the KIP logo. Very fresh!

String Theory

Last Thursday I met Meghan Price one of the designers behind String Theory.
I discovered this company this past November at The One of a Kind show where they stood out like a breath of fresh - modern looking - air! I really love their scarves and shawls - so graphic, fresh, and smart looking. Inspirational.

Ingenious Double Duty furniture

So I have been in reno mode for a few weeks now....

Et Voila:  The solution below!
Just love this very smart piece built by Fugitive Glue in Toronto.

A Month of Great Design in Toronto

The last 30 days has been absolutely chalk full of great design adventures in Toronto including:
 1. A super inspirational talk by Jonathan Adler at the DX
(Took 6 pages of notes!)
 2. A visit to Kevin Austin's stunning new shop Vintage Fine Objects in Corktown
(Could buy everything in the shop!)
The Opening of Revealing The Early Renaissance at The AGO (curated by my friend Sasha Suda) (So proud of her!)

A fashion show of Comrags' Fall Winter 2013 Collection at Andrew Richard Designs
(Loved the clothes + check out this new swanky event space!)

All were very juicy experiences and deserving of their own post -- which will come next week when I'm caught up on my illustration work! Stay tuned.
Toronto - you are a great design city and sometimes terribly distracting. :-)

Comrags

I went to a Spring preview at comrags last night and as always it was inspirational.
I splurged and bought this Isabella dress.
Love the frill on top -and plan on wearing it - as all my comrags dress - for all 4 seasons!

Might just have to get this one too....
I love dresses with POCKETS. (Handy for the iphone!)

Inspiration: Living Etc magazine + Fornasetti

Isn't this studio/office amazing?
I love how the utilitarian furniture is contrasted with the very whimsical Fornasetti pieces.
And don't you think everyone should have some storms clouds + a naked roman lady looking over them as they work!

While working on some pattern samples yesterday I went through a big stack of Living etc magazines for inspiration. In the January 2011 issue there's an amazing piece on the home of Barnaba Fornasetti (the son who took over the design house after the death of his father Piero)
The photos took my breath away and went right up on my inspiration board!

Scandinavia wrap up: Top 10 Design ideas we ought to import to Canada

1.Outdoor squares. So civilized.

2.Cafés with couches in the street. So cozy.

3.More interesting and functional bikes (This one holds a family of 4!)

4.Dual Flush Toliets!!

5.Proper bike lanes (I know, painfully obvious)

6.Signs in Subway that let you know when the next train is coming!

7.Handsome clocks in train stations

8.Bike rack Advertising

9.Bike seat covers (If you are a cyclist you know how handy these would be).

10.Umlauts. Because everything looks so much better with an umlaut.
Right Brüno?

ps.
I'm back home. Still lots to post from Berlin, Copenhagen and Reykjavik.

NYC Day 2 Muji, Great packaging, Din din

Went to Muji. I want one of everything.

Then saw some great packaging in Jublilee market.
Love these Republic of Tea labels with their directives- especially the Get it going one. Very bold idea!
Must check to see who designed them.

Then dinner with lovely Scott.
