Caught in the middle of Hurricane Sandy

Caught in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and having just the coziest time.
There is no power in all of lower Manhattan and no light in the rooms or hot water in the hotel =  guests hanging out in the shared spaces reading, dining and playing board games by candlelight.
Pretty damn cozy.

Saul Steinberg Wallpaper Here I come!

Am off to New York tomorrow and will be staying at the Soho Grand for the first time.
The location is great and I've heard the bar is too die for but what really clinched it for me is the fact that every bathroom contains this wonderful Aviary wallpaper by Saul Steinberg!
This paper was created by Steinberg in the 1950s and reissued years later by Schumacher.

What a fantasticly (sp!) quirky choice by Interior Designer Bill Sofield and perfect space for an illustrator to stay methinks. Can't wait to take a shower!

ps. If you wanna see what hijinks I'm planning... you can check my Pinterest NYC board.
Am going to hear Todd Oldham speak on Saturday as part of the Designers and Books Fair.  (!)

Shoe illustrations in today's Globe and Mail

Several of my shoe illustrations appear in the Focus section of today's Globe - accompanying an article by Ian Brown.  Thrilled to be asked to do this gig as I am a long time fan of Ian Brown and thought his article was hilarious. Thanks to art director Cinder Mcleod for the great assignment.

Also shameless self promotion here!
A reminder that I have a silk screen print version of the fun brogue shoe which appears in the article.
It is available in ochre or blue and available framed or unframed.
Perfect gift for the fashionable fella in your life.

Opening party at FLOR

FLOR is one of my all time favourite companies.

The opening party was very fun.
A great designy crowd, delish nibblies and beautiful carpet tiles to look at.

House + Home editors Kimberly Brown + Margot Austin plus my friend Valerie savor the hors d'oeuvres.

Thanksgiving Illustrations for Real Simple

Here are some illustrations I did for Real Simple magazine.
Art director: Jamie Dannecker.

Above is my sketch for the opener. I liked the figure's slinky dress and cropped head.

Sketch: Lacy Number

This is a sketch I did several years ago for Instyle Magazine for an article on lingerie.
I love drawing lacy things as they provide much opportunity for squiggles.

With the death of a dear contemporary, it becomes a duty to love life all the more intensely on their behalf, because they are no longer here to do it themselves.”
